Nelly Furtado offers a different kind of beat and rhythm that can be both funky and approving. This Canadian singer also writes her song, produce record and even play musical instruments. She’s a total musical performer, not to mention a beautiful face and body to go with her talent.
Nelly Furtado is born on the 2nd of December, 1978. She’s originally from Canada but also has a Portuguese citizenship. She grew up in Victoria in British Columbia and a daughter to proud Portuguese parents. She once worked as a chambermaid alongside her mother who is a housekeeper. Nelly attested that being brought up in a working class family has honed Nelly into a much better person. Nelly learns to play trombone, and ukulele at the age of nine. Not long enough, she learned to tinker with the keyboard and strum the guitar. At 12 years old, Nelly tried writing her first songs. She started out her singing career at the age of 20. It started out during an audition for Lilith Dates where she gets to perform with seasoned singers like Chrissie Hynde, Beth Orton and Sarah McLachlan. Soon after, the release of her debut album entitled "Whoa, Nelly" hit record stores and was instantly a hit. Her song "I’m Like A Bird" was featured during the Grammy Awards of the same year and won for her Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Nelly Furtado is immersed with a lot of musical influences and inspirations. She listens to a number of R&B and hip-hop music and alternative hip-hop. You would hear various world music influences in Nelly’s album. Her influences include Portuguese music, Indian and Brazilian music. A few of her music idols include Janet Jackson, Oasis, Enya, TLC, Madonna and Mary J. Blige, among others. Aside from gracing the stage with her soul voice, Nelly also did acting stints in various US TV show series. She appeared in CSI: New York and on One Life to Live. She also did some acting in Floribella, a hit soap opera in Portugal. In 2003, during the process of producing her second CD entitled "Fresh Off The Beat", Nelly confirmed that she was pregnant at the age of 24. She gave birth to her daughter in September 20 whose dad is DJ Jasper Gahunia. Apparently the relationship did not worked out with Gahunia and Nelly is now engaged to Cuban sound engineer Demacio "Demo" Castellon. She then released another album "Folklore" in that same year, which turned out to be not as popular as her first album. Nelly Furtado went back on track and hit radio plays in 2006 when she released her "Loose" album. Famous hot singles in this album include "Maneater", "Say It Right", "Promiscous", and "All Good Things". The song "Promiscous" won the Pop Single of the Year during the 2006 Billboard Music Awards. In that same year, Nelly won Best International Female Solo Artist in the Brit Awards. |
